Family Day Tree Planting – Honoring Mother Maude Jones & Deacon Bobby Benton

“They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.”
Isaiah 61:3
On July 20th, we gathered to honor two cherished members of our church family: Mother Maude Jones (91) and Deacon Bobby Benton (84), lifelong members of Beard’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and second cousins. They are living stewards of faith, service, and love. Their roots run deep; their parents, Sam and Edna Chatman and Porter and Gennetter Benton were also faithful members of Beard’s Chapel.
An oak tree has been planted in their honor, not as a farewell, but as a living tribute. One tree for two lives intertwined: each unique, yet part of the same story. Like mighty oaks, they have stood firm through life’s seasons, deeply rooted in faith, strong in spirit, and unwavering in their commitment to God and the community.
Let us now take a moment to honor them individually.
Mother Maude Jones
Affectionately known as “Babe,” Mother Jones has lifted her voice in praise as a member of the Senior Choir and continues to serve faithfully on the Mother’s Board and Missionary Committee. She also led the Kitchen Committee for over a decade and helped bring the church kitchen to life by co-signing the church loan that made it possible.
Sis. Maude is equal parts loving, loyal, and sass. Her spirited personality and unique way of speaking keep us all smiling. But fair warning, if you’re not ready for the truth, don’t ask her! It’s her bold honesty and down-to-earth charm that make her a treasured part of our church family. Though she is a widow, Mother Jones is blessed with rich relationships. She is a cherished cousin, a trusted confidante, and a true example of strength, service, and sisterhood.
Deacon Bobby Benton
Bro. Bobby Benton continues to serve faithfully as a Deacon and served over 20 years as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He sang in the Male Chorus and has consistently given his all to the church.
Deacon Benton’s commitment isn’t just spiritual. He has supported Beard’s Chapel financially, co-signing two church loans. He’s also invested in our young people, rewarding good report cards and even offering a few dollars for lower grades to encourage improvement. And whether you’re young or old, chances are you’ve gotten a financial lecture on spending and saving money.
He and his beloved wife, Lorene, have been married for 60 years. A proud father and grandfather, he continues to bless his family with wisdom, humor, and support.

We honor Mother Jones and Deacon Benton not just for what they have done, but for who they are, humble, dependable, and faithful servants. They are living examples of what it means to be planted in purpose and flourishing in faith.
May this tree grow tall and strong and serve as a lasting reminder to generations to come that those who trust in the Lord shall never wither.
